The 2026 Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid is coming to the US, but there's a twist! It's essentially a rebranded Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and this is where things get interesting. But is it a genuine Nissan?
The Rogue, known as the X-Trail in some markets, is set to make waves in the US with its plug-in hybrid variant. Unveiled ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, this PHEV model is a significant step for Nissan in the US market, even though it's not entirely their own creation.
Here's the deal: the Rogue Plug-in Hybrid is a close relative of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, with a few minor exterior tweaks. This isn't a surprise, as Nissan and Mitsubishi are partners in an alliance with Renault, sharing the same Renault–Nissan CMF-CD platform for these models.
Under the hood, the story continues. The powertrain is shared, featuring a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine, two electric motors, and a 20-kWh battery. This setup delivers an impressive 248 hp and 437 Nm of torque, providing an electric all-wheel-drive experience.
In pure electric mode, the Rogue PHEV can travel up to 61 km (38 miles), while the hybrid mode offers a substantial EPA-estimated total driving range of up to 676 km (420 miles). Charging is done via AC, and a Level 2 home charger can fully replenish the battery in 7.5 hours.
Drivers will have a range of drive modes to choose from, including Normal, Power, Eco, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud, allowing for tailored power delivery and AWD torque distribution. Additionally, EV, Save, and Charge modes enable efficient energy management, and two levels of regenerative braking are available.
US customers will have two grades to choose from: SL and Premium. Both grades offer a host of features, including a large infotainment touchscreen, a digital driver display, a head-up display, a premium sound system, an extensive airbag system, advanced driver-assistance features, and more.
And here's the part most people miss: the Rogue Plug-in Hybrid is a strategic move by Nissan to quickly enter the US PHEV market. By leveraging an existing platform and powertrain, they've saved time and resources. But will this impact the perception of Nissan's innovation and engineering prowess?
