The Relay's itinerary spans from December 6, 2025, to February 6, 2026, covering over 12,000 kilometers and passing through every Italian region. More than 300 municipalities and 60 celebration cities will come alive, creating a unique tapestry of territories, stories, and communities.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Relay's route isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey itself. Giovanni Malagò, President of Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026, describes it as "a journey that weaves roots and future, hospitality, and innovation."
The Relay begins with the lighting of the Olympic Flame in Olympia, a sacred site for the Olympic tradition. On December 4, the Flame is handed over to Italy in Athens, marking the official start of the journey towards the Olympic Winter Games. The Flame then travels to Rome, where the Olympic Torch Relay officially kicks off on December 6.
"Every step of the Relay through our cities will remind the world of the power of sport to unite and inspire," says Malagò.
And this is the part most people miss... The Relay isn't just about the iconic places and collective memory; it's about the heart of Italy. The Flame will pass by symbols of Italy's cultural heritage, like the Colosseo and Fontana di Trevi, but it will also visit places of resilience and renewal, such as Amatrice and the Scampia district.
Maria Laura Iascone, Director of Ceremonies at Fondazione, emphasizes, "The route celebrates the country's evocative landscapes and the stories of talent, courage, and solidarity that define them."
The Flame's journey includes some extraordinary highlights: an ascent to Punta Gnifetti on Monte Rosa, a visit to the Marmore Falls, the magical Amalfi Coast illuminated by torchbearers, and a passage along the Grand Canal in Venice.
The Relay will also be accompanied by Coca-Cola and Eni, the Presenting Partners, who will enhance each stage with special activations.
