AI Revolution: How China's Storage Sector is Adapting (2026)

The AI revolution has arrived, and with it, a glimmer of hope for China's hard-pressed storage industry. In a recent interview, a senior executive from Huawei Technologies, Zhou Yuefeng, shared his insights on how the AI boom could be a game-changer for Chinese storage companies.

Despite facing challenges from international competitors and intense domestic price wars, China's hard drive storage industry is on the brink of a potential turnaround. Zhou, who also leads Huawei Cloud and its data storage product line, revealed that the Chinese market's annual hard disk drive consumption is valued at nearly CNY60 billion (USD8.3 billion). However, he emphasized the industry's reliance on foreign core technologies and production capacity, leaving China vulnerable to global supply chain fluctuations.

"The lack of core technologies puts China's storage sector at a disadvantage. We need breakthroughs in materials, manufacturing, and processes to catch up," Zhou said.

But here's where it gets controversial: Zhou believes the AI era could be China's saving grace. With rising investment in AI data infrastructure and the growing need for long-term data preservation, the demand for hard drives is skyrocketing. This presents an opportunity for Chinese storage companies to close the gap with their international peers.

"In the AI era, systems must handle massive data processing and transmission. Even the biggest tech companies are working on parallel data processing. High-bandwidth storage products are the key to catching up," Zhou explained.

Zhou likened storage systems in the AI era to a collaborative system, where data storage and processing power work in harmony, just like a smart person's quick thinking and excellent memory.

To capitalize on this opportunity, Zhou urged Chinese IT firms to invest more in the storage sector. He envisions future hard drives as intelligent data platforms with AI capabilities, no longer just "data warehouses."

Huawei plans to launch a physical AI data platform early next year, integrating AI features like inference acceleration and knowledge-base generation. Zhou emphasized the need for Chinese storage companies to accelerate AI-oriented innovation and build a complete industrial chain.

"China's journey towards 'storage independence' is still ongoing. We need collaboration across the industrial chain to accelerate technological innovation and reach this goal," Zhou said.

As we transition from digitization to intelligence, data becomes even more valuable, and the hard drive storage market is set to expand further.
