The National Wildlife Federation has just unveiled the winners of its 54th annual photo contest, and it's a celebration of the extraordinary beauty and diversity of our planet. Among the stunning lineup of images, a photo of a female blue Arctic fox on Alaska's St. George Island has taken the top prize.
This year's contest received nearly 30,000 submissions from over 3,200 photographers worldwide, showcasing the majesty of wildlife, plants, and landscapes from every corner of the globe. The winning selection offers a glimpse into the raw strength and surprises that nature has to offer, from volcanic eruptions to fairy-tale-like encounters.
Jennifer Wehunt, the editorial director of National Wildlife magazine, described the winning images as "astonishing glimpses" that capture nature's ability to amaze. She emphasized that this contest not only showcases stunning photography but also serves a greater purpose: inspiring people to care about wildlife and wild lands.
"By submitting their work, photographers support the National Wildlife Federation's mission to protect wildlife species and their habitats," the magazine stated. "This mission is more crucial than ever, and these photographers help us spread awareness and inspire action."
The grand prize of $5,000 went to Kathleen Borshanian for her captivating image of the Arctic fox. Borshanian, a Salt Lake City photographer, used a telephoto lens to capture the moment without disturbing the fox or her kits, creating a truly magical shot.
In addition to the grand prize, first and second place awards were given in eight different categories, each showcasing a unique aspect of nature. From mammals and baby animals to birds, landscapes, and even mobile photography, the contest celebrated a wide range of talents and perspectives.
And here's where it gets even more exciting: the contest also featured a Portfolio category, with a single winner, Zhengze Xu, taking home the $750 prize. Each first-place winner in the other categories received $500, while second-place winners were awarded $250.
