Bournemouth's 20mph Plan: A Step Towards Safer Roads (2026)

Bournemouth's roads are about to get a major speed limit shake-up! The local council is proposing a 20mph speed restriction on a whopping 139 roads across the town, following in the footsteps of Wales, which implemented a similar nationwide policy in 2023. But will this change be a blessing or a burden for drivers and residents?

The evidence from Wales is compelling. Data revealed that in the first year of the 20mph scheme, the number of road casualties dropped by a significant 28%, resulting in 10 fewer fatalities. That's a powerful argument for the potential benefits of reduced speed limits.

Local Green Party councillor Simon Bull, representing Winton East, acknowledged that drivers might need time to adjust to the new limit but expressed optimism about its impact. He shared that most residents he's spoken to are in favor of the 20mph zones, believing it will improve road safety, especially on streets lined with parked cars.

But here's where it gets controversial: The public consultation received mixed responses, with 96 in support, 105 objections, and 8 general comments. The BCP and Dorset Motorists Group vehemently opposed the plans, gathering over 3,000 signatures on a petition. They argue that while 20mph zones are appropriate near schools, implementing them 24/7 across the entire town is excessive.

Steve Moody, chair of the motorists' group, suggested a compromise: 'We believe 20mph zones should be part-time, not a blanket rule.'

So, what's your take? Is a town-wide 20mph limit a sensible safety measure or an unnecessary restriction? Should it be applied universally or only in specific areas? Share your thoughts below, and let's keep the conversation rolling!
