Breaking News: A massive fire erupted in Wigan's town center, sending emergency services scrambling!
On a quiet Sunday morning, an investigation was launched following a significant overnight blaze. The incident occurred on King Street in Wigan, with emergency services receiving the call around 10:30 PM on Saturday night.
It's believed that the fire consumed the former Jak's nightclub, which has been closed for some time. However, the fire service has yet to officially confirm this detail.
King Street, typically bustling with Saturday night crowds, was immediately shut down by the police. The fire also led to the closure of nearby bars. Reef Bar and Terrace, located next door, quickly evacuated its patrons. In a Facebook post, the bar commended its staff, security, and DJs for their efficient and safe evacuation.
Fire crews remained on the scene throughout Sunday morning. Social media posts showcased a large emergency services presence, with dramatic images and videos capturing flames engulfing the derelict building.
Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) deployed a drone to assess the situation from above. In a social media update, they urged the public to avoid the area.
According to an eyewitness, a man was detained by police for violating the established cordon.
A spokesperson for GMFRS stated that six fire engines from Wigan, Hindley, Leigh, Horwich, along with an engine from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, a Command Unit from Rochdale, an Aerial Ladder Platform from Bolton, an Enhanced Rescue Unit from Ashton, and the drone, were quickly on the scene to tackle the large fire in the empty commercial building. Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire using two ground monitors and the Aerial Ladder Platform. Crews were still present at the site.
The Manchester Evening News has reached out to Greater Manchester Police for further comment, but no additional information has been released.
But here's where it gets controversial... Could this fire have been prevented? What safety measures were in place at the abandoned nightclub?
