Imagine a world where peace and security are not just ideals, but a shared reality, especially in areas facing significant challenges. That's the vision driving a crucial collaboration between China, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN). A recent high-level seminar, held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together officials to discuss deepening China-Africa cooperation. The goal? To build lasting peace and security across Africa and beyond.
The core of this discussion revolves around China's Global Security Initiative (GSI). This initiative, under the theme "Working Together to Build a Common Security: China and Africa in Action," aims to foster a cooperative approach to global security challenges. But here's where it gets interesting: the GSI has already garnered support from over 130 countries and various international and regional organizations.
Wang Lixin, a key figure from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted China's commitment to Africa's modernization and security. She emphasized China's significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts, including deploying the largest number of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the UN Security Council. Furthermore, China is the second-largest financial contributor to UN peacekeeping operations, with over 2,000 Chinese peacekeeping personnel currently serving in various African regions, from Mali to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan.
Moussa Mohamed Omar, from the AU Commission, emphasized that the GSI aligns with the principle of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. He pointed out that security challenges in Africa, such as terrorism, transnational crimes, and climate change, often transcend national borders. The GSI's emphasis on cooperation resonates with the African doctrine of "African solutions to African problems."
Jiang Feng, head of the Mission of China to the AU, further explained that the GSI seeks to address the global peace deficit and respond to international security challenges, ultimately aiming for enduring peace worldwide. He stressed the initiative's commitment to respecting sovereignty and taking all countries' security concerns seriously, aligning with the agendas of both the UN and the AU.
Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, a UN special representative, noted that the UN welcomes the GSI as part of a broader effort to strengthen multilateralism globally. The seminar, attended by approximately 120 officials and scholars, focused on implementing the GSI in Africa as part of the broader goal of building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future.
