Dar es Salaam BRT Phase Two Resumes: Commuters Celebrate Lower Fares & Easier Travel (2026)

A sigh of relief echoes through Dar es Salaam as the much-needed BRT Phase Two services make their triumphant return! After a brief hiatus due to unfortunate circumstances, commuters are rejoicing over the restoration of this vital transportation system.

But here's where it gets controversial... The BRT service, which officially resumed on November 20, 2025, had to temporarily halt operations due to infrastructure damage during the October 29 unrest. This disruption caused quite a stir among the city's residents, especially those relying on the BRT for their daily commute.

Mr. Isack Mbando, a regular commuter, shared his thoughts with The Citizen. He highlighted the significant financial savings that the BRT offers compared to conventional buses. "With the BRT charging Sh750 per trip, passengers can save a substantial amount daily. For regular travellers, this amounts to at least Sh2,600 in savings!" he exclaimed.

Mr. Mbando further emphasized the BRT's efficiency and reliability, especially during peak hours. "I used to spend Sh3,000 for a one-way trip, but now I pay only Sh700. It's a game-changer for workers and traders like me!" he added.

Another commuter, Ms. Subira Omary, welcomed the resumption but urged authorities to take proactive measures to prevent future disruptions. "We need assurance that our transportation infrastructure is secure. The government must prioritize safeguarding these facilities because they are essential for our daily lives," she stated.

The resumption of BRT services was directed by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila. He instructed relevant government institutions to ensure the BRT's return by November 20, 2025. Mr. Chalamila emphasized the need for a swift restoration, stating, "The services on the Mbagala route must resume. All buses should be back on the road by Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 8 am or earlier."

However, the question remains: When will services resume along the Kimara corridor? While Mr. Chalamila didn't provide a specific timeline, he assured the public that an announcement would be made soon.

The Mbagala BRT service, supported by 250 buses provided by Mofat Company, began its journey on October 12, 2025, but unfortunately, it was short-lived due to the October 29 unrest.

In a statement, Dart reminded passengers of the importance of using Smart Cards or the Mwendokasi app for cashless payments. Those without the required digital platforms will not be permitted to board the buses.

As the BRT Phase Two services resume, Dar es Salaam commuters can look forward to a more efficient and cost-effective transportation system. But this story is far from over.
