Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS), Emirates Airline, and Thales have joined forces in a groundbreaking Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) to revolutionize air travel, specifically focusing on the efficiency of flights arriving at Dubai International Airport. This partnership is a significant step towards a more streamlined and sustainable future for air travel, aligning perfectly with the UAE's ambitious Net Zero by 2050 target.
So, what exactly are holding patterns, and why are they a target for improvement? These patterns are essentially carefully orchestrated, racetrack-shaped circuits that aircraft follow at specific altitudes. They're crucial for maintaining safety and managing the flow of air traffic, especially during peak times or when runways are congested. However, the downside? Holding patterns lead to increased fuel consumption and, consequently, higher carbon emissions.
Under this innovative agreement, the three partners will delve into cutting-edge research to optimize air traffic management. A central element of their strategy involves the integration of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. And this is the part most people miss... AI will be used to identify potential congestion areas and provide real-time recommendations to stakeholders. The goal? To empower air traffic controllers and airlines to minimize delays, enhance predictability, and significantly boost operational efficiency across the entire airspace network.
Abdelhafid Mordi, Vice President of Thales in UAE and Iraq, and CEO of Thales Emarat Technologies, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: "This innovative partnership with Dubai Air Navigation Services and Emirates Airline will allow us to strengthen the UAE’s airspace management technologies.
