A tragic and violent incident unfolded in Anambra State, sparking urgent concern: a police officer was shot and a civilian lost their life during a brazen attack on the convoy linked to former Anambra governor Chris Ngige. But here's where it gets controversial—this high-profile assault raises serious questions about security and political violence in the region.
The attack happened on Wednesday along the Nkpor-Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, according to reliable sources including a statement from Fred Chukwuelobe, who serves as a media aide to Mr. Ngige. Importantly, the former governor was not present in the convoy when the attack took place.
During the violent incident, gunmen disguised in police and military uniforms targeted the convoy. A policeman traveling in the pilot car was shot, with the assailants seizing his firearm and uniform—highlighting how the attackers used deception to carry out their operation. Tragically, a woman recording the attack on her phone was fatally shot, and a nearby male shop owner who rushed over to see what was happening was also injured by gunfire. The shop owner lost a significant amount of blood and was rushed into surgery to remove bullets, but is expected to recover fully.
Mr. Chukwuelobe emphasized that the wounded police officer has undergone surgery and is stable, expecting a full recovery, despite the pilot vehicle being extensively damaged by bullet holes. Following the attack, Mr. Ngige personally assured his aide that all those hurt will receive proper medical care and extended condolences to the family of the deceased woman.
Official confirmation from the police spokesperson in Anambra State, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, added further details in a Thursday statement. A state police task force immediately launched a manhunt against the attackers, who had initially stolen a Mercedes-Benz SUV during the assault. However, the stolen vehicle was recovered after police operatives engaged the criminals in a shootout along Umuoji Road at Eziowelle.
The police successfully coordinated efforts between several specialized units, including the Tactical Operatives from Awka, Rapid Response Squad from Akwuzu, and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit from Enugu-Ukwu. Their combined pursuit forced the armed criminals to abandon the vehicle and flee under intense pressure. It was verified that the officers in the attacked convoy are affiliated with Senator Chris Ngige.
Despite the officer being shot, he remains stable and is receiving medical treatment, while the recovered vehicle is now in custody for further investigation. The police have vowed to intensify a statewide search for the suspects responsible.
This violent episode is far from isolated. Anambra has seen a concerning surge in attacks targeting political figures over recent years. For example, in September 2022, gunmen ambushed the convoy of then-Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, resulting in the deaths of several personal and security aides.
Beyond politicians, lawmakers have become targets as well. In May 2022, a lawmaker representing Aguata 2 Constituency, Okechukwu Okoye, was abducted and brutally beheaded alongside his aide just days after their kidnapping. Shockingly, in a chilling continuation, another political figure’s adviser, Uzozie Chukwujekwu, was kidnapped and his only son shot mere hours after the news of the beheading spread.
Several former members of the Anambra State Assembly have also faced similar deadly attacks. The violence has not spared other community leaders, government officials, security personnel, and even religious figures. Late in 2024, a retired Anglican Archbishop of Nnewi, Godwin Okpala, was abducted alongside his driver but fortunately released after almost a month.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of orchestrating some of these violent acts. However, IPOB leaders deny such involvement. This militant group campaigns for an independent Biafra state carved from Nigeria’s South-east and South-south regions. Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was recently sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism charges—a development that adds another layer to the ongoing conflict.
And this is the part most people miss: the continual violence targeting politically connected individuals may reflect deeper issues around insecurity and political tension in Anambra and the wider region. What do you think—are these attacks symptoms of a failing security system, political vendettas, or something more complex?
