The J. Press Spring 2026 collection is a captivating journey into the heart of Ivy League style, reimagined for a modern audience. It all began with a book, "Take Ivy," published in Japan in 1965. This photographic masterpiece captured the essence of eight prestigious U.S. universities, known for their ivy-clad walls and the preppy culture that flourished within. Among these institutions, J. Press stood out as a cornerstone of the preppy movement, opening its doors on the Yale campus in 1902 and quickly becoming the go-to destination for young men to curate their wardrobes.
"Take Ivy" served as the inspiration for J. Press' president and creative director, Jack Carlson. He penned a new foreword for a special edition of the book, which was thoughtfully placed on each guest's seat during the company's showcase at the New York Historical Society. Carlson explained, "This show is a celebration of 'Take Ivy,' a style bible for the Ivy League look. J. Press is prominently featured, recognized by the authors and photographers for its role in shaping this iconic style. It's a moment in menswear where 'ivy style' is taking center stage, and we're proud to own this movement that resonates so strongly today."
Carlson, the founder of Rowing Blazers and a recent addition to the J. Press team, emphasized the company's unique position. "J. Press is the true guardian of this style. It's the last brand authentically preserving this tradition, without irony or dilution."
For his collection, Carlson drew inspiration from Ivy League staples, such as button-down oxford shirts, madras pants and shorts, varsity jackets, and V-neck sweaters. While the collection leaned towards casual wear, with an abundance of patched sweaters and school-themed jackets, it also included more formal pieces like plaid blazers, double-breasted suits, and the iconic repp tie. Carlson even added a contemporary twist with updated tuxedos, pairing blackwatch pants with a varsity jacket or a bold Princeton-inspired blazer in orange and black, complete with a bow tie.
With this collection, Carlson masterfully balanced tradition and modernity, staying true to the essence of J. Press and ivy style while infusing it with a fresh, contemporary appeal. A testament to his success, the "Take Ivy" team would undoubtedly give their seal of approval.
