Jon Sumrall's First Florida Gators Staff Moves | Dave Caldwell Hired as GM (2026)

The Florida Gators are gearing up for a new era, and the buzz is all about who will be joining the team under the leadership of Jon Sumrall. It's a critical time for the program, and every staff addition is crucial. Sumrall, even while still leading Tulane in the American Athletic Conference Championship, is already hard at work building his team for the Gators.

Sumrall's statement on Sunday highlighted his excitement and vision: "The University of Florida is one of the premier programs in college football, and it's an incredible honor to serve as the head football coach... I believe in building a team rooted in toughness, accountability and a relentless competitive spirit. Florida has everything necessary to compete at the highest level - the resources, the support, the tradition and the passion of Gator Nation. My family and I are excited to get to work."

He emphasized the importance of an explosive offense, stating, "One of my first priorities will be to assemble an incredible staff, including an offensive coordinator who understands that, at Florida, having an explosive offense isn't optional — it's mandatory!"

So, who's joining the ranks?

General Manager: Dave Caldwell

Swamp247 and CBS Sports have confirmed the move to hire Dave Caldwell as the general manager. Caldwell, who joined Sumrall in a Zoom meeting to address Florida's 2026 recruiting class, brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Before Florida, Caldwell spent nearly five seasons as a personnel executive with Philadelphia, contributing to the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX-winning roster. He held roles as senior personnel director and advisor to the general manager. Prior to his time with the Eagles, Caldwell was the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars for eight years. He also worked with the Atlanta Falcons and as a scout for the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers.

But here's where it gets controversial... Caldwell's tenure with the Jaguars saw the team reach the AFC Conference Championship in the 2017-18 season, but overall, the team's record under his leadership was 37-86 (.301). This raises questions about his ability to bring consistent winning to Florida.

Did you know? Caldwell was often seen scouting the annual Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville, even after leaving his position as the Jaguars' general manager.

This marks Caldwell's first administrative position in college football. He played linebacker at John Carroll University from 1992-96.

Florida had previously interviewed Caldwell for the general manager position last offseason but ultimately hired Nick Polk. Jacob LaFrance also currently serves as a general manager for player personnel. The future roles of Polk and LaFrance are currently uncertain.
