Kendrick Lamar Wows Canberra with a Birthday Serenade for a Young Fan at Spilt Milk Festival
In Canberra, the spotlight belonged to a nine-year-old superfan when Kendrick Lamar paused his Spilt Milk set to sing Happy Birthday to Kalina Fowler, who was visibly moved to tears as tens of thousands of festival-goers joined in. Kalina recalled to ABC Canberra that she had been shouting, “it’s my birthday, it’s my birthday,” and Lamar halted the performance right in the middle of the song to acknowledge her moment. “It was the most joyful moment ever — my first concert,” she shared.
The renowned rapper didn’t stop at the song; he also handed Kalina a signed, personalized cap. Kalina laughed that many people wanted the hat and even offered money for it, but she chose to keep the keepsake, declaring, “this hat is priceless, I’ll guard it for life and won’t let anyone touch it.”
Video clips of the surprise moment quickly spread across social media, capturing a scene that resonated with many viewers.
Kalina, who performs with the Yukkumbruk Dancers, had earlier taken part in a Welcome to Country ceremony at the festival. She had hoped to meet Lamar backstage but ended up watching his performance from her grandfather’s shoulders in the crowd.
Her grandfather, Robert Palm, reflected that Lamar seemed surprised by a nine-year-old’s familiarity with his lyrics, noting that Kalina knew every word.
Kalina’s grandmother, Serena Williams, a Ngunnawal elder, watched the moment unfold from the audience and described the family as overwhelmed with emotion. “We were crying, and we’ve continued crying this morning because we’re so moved,” she said. Williams also highlighted Lamar’s significance to Indigenous youth, pointing to his outspoken stance on Black Power and justice issues impacting Black communities around the world.
Lamar closed out the Canberra stop of Spilt Milk as the festival’s headline act, following appearances in Ballarat, Perth, and the Gold Coast. About 50,000 people attended the Canberra leg, despite wet weather conditions.
Kalina believes her blue braids captured the artist’s attention, calling the moment the “best birthday gift ever.” Looking ahead, she said that when she has children, she plans to pass the hat to them so it can continue to inspire future generations. This nine-year-old’s memory of the day is sure to stay with her for a lifetime.
