The Kennet Centre, a beloved shopping hub in Newbury, has officially closed its doors for the last time. This iconic landmark, which opened in phases between 1974 and the mid-1980s, is now set to undergo a transformation. It will be redeveloped into Old Town, a unique complex featuring mews houses and reduced retail space, marking a new chapter in the area's history.
Richard Farley, the popular centre manager, bid farewell to the Kennet Centre in an emotional post on Facebook. He shared his feelings about locking up the mall for the final time, stating, "Tonight I locked up the Kennet Shopping centre to the public for the last time as it closes for good." It's been a significant part of his life since 1997, and he expressed his deep connection to the place, saying, "Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love this place."
Farley will continue to manage the centre for a few months as the strip-out works commence, ensuring a smooth transition before the demolition phase begins. This closure marks the end of an era for the Kennet Centre, leaving a lasting impact on the community and setting the stage for its exciting future transformation.
