A temporary speed limit is coming to a busy roundabout near Bristol Airport, sparking both excitement and potential concerns. But why the change? It's all part of a major road improvement plan, and it's about to get interesting.
The roundabout in question, known as the Edithmead roundabout, is a crucial junction connecting the M5 motorway to Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge. In a joint effort, Somerset and North Somerset councils are implementing a series of enhancements along the A38 to reduce congestion and enhance safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Here's the twist: the roundabout will be transformed into a 'throughabout', a design that allows M5 traffic to seamlessly continue onto the northbound A38. This innovative approach is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, but it requires some initial adjustments.
Starting Monday, contractors will begin the preliminary work, including tree removal, to prepare for the main project. And this is where it gets controversial... To ensure the safety of workers and road users during this phase, a 30mph (48km/h) speed limit will be enforced on all roundabout approaches. This reduced speed will remain in effect until at least March 20, giving rise to potential debates about its impact on travel times.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, responsible for transport and waste services, acknowledged the potential concerns about the clearance work, but assured residents that a comprehensive landscaping plan will restore greenery once the project is complete.
The throughabout design is inspired by the recently finished Dunball scheme in Bridgwater, which has already proven successful. With over £26 million provisionally allocated by the Department for Transport for 10 projects in the area, the councils are committed to making these improvements a reality. However, the exact start date and duration of the Edithmead roundabout work remain undisclosed, leaving some residents curious and perhaps a bit anxious.
