A groundbreaking wind farm and battery project, boasting 105 of Australia's largest turbines, is set to revolutionize the energy landscape. This ambitious proposal, known as the Wanganella Wind Farm, aims to harness the power of renewable energy and store it efficiently. Located near the NSW town of Wanganella, the project is strategically positioned halfway between Deniliquin and Hay, with plans to connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via the Victoria New South Wales Interconnector West (VNI West).

The Wanganella Wind Farm, with its 840 megawatt (MW) capacity, will be a significant addition to Australia's renewable energy infrastructure. The NSW section of the VNI West project involves a double-circuit 500kV transmission line, connecting the border with Victoria to the Dinawan substation, and replacing the existing 330kV line between Wagga and Gugaa substations. This infrastructure will also link Sydney to the Snowy 2.0 pumped hydro scheme and provide a new connection to Victoria.

Despite the project's potential, it has faced challenges, mirroring the delays and cost overruns experienced by many major NEM transmission upgrades. In July, Transgrid, the developer of the NSW component, announced a staged approach to focus on a critical 500 kV link, supporting new wind and solar generators in the South West Renewable Energy Zone, while planning for the interconnector into Victoria continues.

Equis Wind Australia, the developer behind this ambitious project, has returned to Australia with a diverse portfolio of wind and battery storage projects. Supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, their projects span four states. The battery projects include the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub in Victoria, Calala BESS in NSW, Koolunga BESS in South Australia, and Lower Wonga BESS in Queensland. Additionally, Equis is developing the Bell Bay wind farm in Tasmania and the Jackson North wind farm in Queensland.
