Rome's iconic Trevi Fountain has implemented a new fee structure, sparking a debate about managing tourist hotspots. The city aims to tackle overcrowding and improve the visitor experience at one of the world's most renowned waterworks.
Starting Monday, tourists eager to immerse themselves in the fountain's grandeur must pay a modest 2 euros. This initiative follows a successful year-long trial, where access was regulated through designated lines and pathways, yielding positive results.
"It's a small price to pay for quality access," remarked Ilhan Musbah, a tourist from Morocco, highlighting the improved accessibility and comfort now offered.
The fee is part of Rome's broader strategy to manage tourist flows and preserve its cultural heritage. Officials estimate it will generate an additional 6.5 million euros annually, funding the expansion of free city-run museums for local residents.
But here's where it gets controversial: Rome's tourism assessor, Alessandro Onorato, believes the fee is a bargain compared to what other cities might charge for such a renowned site.
"If the Trevi Fountain were in New York, they'd charge at least $100," he stated.
This fee mirrors similar ticketing systems at Rome's Pantheon and Venice's day-tripper tax, both aimed at curbing overtourism. However, it pales in comparison to the Louvre Museum's recent 45% price hike for non-European visitors.
The Trevi fee allows tourists to enjoy the fountain during prime daylight hours, with the option to pay in advance online. The iconic view from the piazza above remains free, as does the after-hours up-close experience.
