Melioidosis: A Hidden Danger in Queensland's Flood Aftermath
A deadly disease lurks in the aftermath of North Queensland's floods, raising alarms among health officials. Four residents have been hospitalized with melioidosis, a severe soil-borne infection, as the region recovers from heavy rainfall. The patients, aged 67 to 89, hail from Armstrong Beach, Seaforth, and Bowen, all exposed to mud or floodwaters. As of January 19, Queensland reported 16 cases of melioidosis, with the Mackay region witnessing new infections. This prompted Steven Donohue, director of the Mackay Public Health Unit, to issue a warning to flood clean-up crews.

Queensland Health has launched a public awareness campaign, and investigations are ongoing to pinpoint the outbreak's source. Dr. Michael Clements, Rural Chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, emphasizes the importance of taking precautions during flood clean-up. He advises covering legs or wearing masks to minimize the risk of infection.
