A Political Storm in Nyamira: Governor's Impeachment Unveiled
The recent impeachment of Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has sent shockwaves through the county's political landscape.
In a dramatic turn of events, Governor Nyaribo found himself facing impeachment by a significant number of County Assembly members. With 23 members voting against him, the governor's fate hung in the balance.
The Assembly was divided, with 28 MCAs present during the crucial vote. However, an intriguing twist unfolded as Speaker Thadeus Nyabaro allowed six members to cast votes on behalf of their absent colleagues, ensuring the necessary threshold was met.
But here's where it gets controversial: the MCAs disregarded a sworn affidavit from the 12 absentees, raising questions about the legitimacy of the process. Nyaribo faced a range of charges, including abuse of office, as alleged by Bonyamatuta MCA Kimwomi Matwere.
This is not the first time Nyaribo has faced such allegations. In late 2020, he ascended to power after the death of his predecessor, John Nyagarama, and has since weathered similar impeachment attempts twice. The accusations in both instances bore striking similarities.
In October 2023, MCAs attempted to impeach Nyaribo on grounds of mismanagement, nepotism, and failure to comply with statutory deductions. Although he survived that attempt, it left the Assembly deeply divided, with factions forming and conducting parallel sessions outside the official chambers.
It took a series of court cases and interventions to bring the MCAs back together. The removal of Enock Okero as speaker, upheld by the high court, was a crucial step towards unity.
Fast forward to September 2024, and nominated MCA Evans Matunda sponsored a second impeachment bid. Despite the efforts, they fell short of the two-thirds threshold, with only 22 pro-impeachment MCAs voting.
And this is the part most people miss: with three upcoming by-elections, the Assembly's composition is in flux. Currently, the Assembly has 32 members out of a possible 35, leaving Nyaribo in a precarious position. To survive this fresh onslaught, he must secure the support of at least 12 members.
The future of Nyamira's leadership hangs in the balance, and the political landscape remains tense. As the county navigates this turbulent period, the question remains: Will Governor Nyaribo emerge victorious, or will the impeachment process prevail?
