Another Blow to the Gaming Industry: Outright Games Cuts 27 Jobs
The gaming world is reeling once again as UK-based publisher Outright Games announces the layoff of 27 employees across its UK and Spanish teams. But here's where it gets controversial: the company claims these cuts are necessary to ensure they're "aligned with market conditions." Is this a necessary evil in a tough market, or a sign of deeper troubles within the industry?
Outright Games, known for its family-friendly titles featuring beloved characters like Barbie, Paw Patrol, and the NBA, has stated that this decision wasn't made lightly. A spokesperson emphasized their commitment to supporting affected employees during this transition. They frame these layoffs as part of a strategic restructuring to position the company for future success, while maintaining their focus on delivering high-quality family entertainment.
However, this news comes on the heels of a string of unsettling developments for Outright Games. Just four months ago, Aheartfulofgames, a studio owned by Outright and responsible for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed, faced redundancy for 28 employees. This followed a leadership change at Outright, reportedly shifting focus towards "low-cost, fast-turnaround projects."
Adding to the complexity, Outright Games recently became part of a new holding company, Roundtable Interactive Group, alongside Auroch Digital, GameMill Entertainment, and Coherence. Led by industry veteran Robin Flodin, this move raises questions about the future direction of Outright and its place within this larger entity.
Unfortunately, Outright Games isn't alone in its struggles. The gaming industry has been plagued by layoffs and studio closures in recent years. From Avalanche Studios shutting down its Liverpool branch to Crystal Dynamics' repeated rounds of layoffs, the picture is grim. Redhill Games' restructuring and Sharkmob's undisclosed job cuts further highlight the industry's precarious state.
Is this a temporary downturn, or a sign of a deeper shift in the gaming landscape? The rise of mobile gaming, changing consumer habits, and the increasing cost of development all contribute to a complex and challenging environment. While Outright Games promises to weather the storm, the future remains uncertain for many developers and the industry as a whole. What do you think? Are these layoffs a necessary evil, or a symptom of a larger problem? Let us know in the comments below.
