PIA Privatization: What You Need to Know | Pakistan's National Airline (2026)

A bold move is underway in Pakistan's aviation industry, and it's got everyone talking. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an accelerated privatization process for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), a decision that could revolutionize the country's skies. But here's where it gets controversial...

During a meeting to assess PIA's privatization progress, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to boost the airline's fleet and punctuality. He stressed that operational efficiency must be a top priority, a sentiment echoed by many in the industry.

The Privatisation Commission has prequalified four parties for this long-awaited transaction, with plans to sell a 75% stake while retaining management control. However, there's a catch - strict conditions will be imposed to maintain PIA's brand identity post-privatization.

A press release from the Prime Minister's Office confirmed that officials briefed the meeting on the ongoing process and its associated business plan. The bidding phase is set to begin soon, adding fuel to the fire of speculation.

In July, the Privatisation Commission's Board prequalified four entities: Fauji Fertiliser Company Ltd, Air Blue (Private) Ltd, a consortium of Lucky Cement Ltd and others, and another consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation Ltd. This month, the government approved the addition of AKD Group Holdings (Pvt) Ltd to the Arif Habib-led consortium, a move that has sparked further interest.

Attending the meeting were key government officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, and others. They were informed that PIA's airworthy fleet will increase from 18 to 38 by 2029, and the airline aims to expand its service network to over 40 destinations by the same year.

While the aviation industry buzzes with this news, the Prime Minister also discussed housing matters with Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Hussain Pirzada, showcasing his commitment to multiple sectors.

This story, published in Dawn on November 21st, 2025, invites discussion. What are your thoughts on PIA's privatization? Is it a step towards progress or a risky move? Share your insights and let's spark a conversation!
