For women with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), pregnancy is often a rare occurrence due to disrupted fertility. However, kidney transplantation can significantly restore reproductive function, offering hope to those who wish to start or expand their families.
The Study:
Researchers at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) in Saudi Arabia conducted a study to evaluate the outcomes of pregnancies in kidney transplant recipients. The study, spanning from 2012 to 2021, aimed to provide insights that could enhance patient counseling and management strategies for this specific patient population.
Methods and Findings:
The study analyzed 37 pregnancies in 35 kidney transplant recipients. Most transplants were from living, related donors. Pre-pregnancy lab results showed some concerning trends, with anemia and elevated creatinine levels in a significant portion of patients.
As the pregnancies progressed, there was a noticeable decline in renal function, with elevated creatinine levels and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in many patients.
