A nation in turmoil, Tanzania, stands at a crossroads. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, in a bold move, has established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the tragic events of October 29, 2025, where youth-led protests and a heavy-handed response from security forces resulted in countless lives lost.
In her address at the launch of this commission, President Samia emphasized the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation, guided by the country's legal framework, the Commissions of Inquiry Act of 2023. She highlighted the unexpected nature of the incident, given Tanzania's history of political stability and safety.
"The formation of this commission is a step towards understanding the root cause of the calamity that befell our nation," she stated. "We must uncover the actual trigger, the underlying issues that led to such a devastating outcome."
President Samia further delved into the motivations of the youth who took to the streets, questioning the rights they felt were denied and the purpose of their protest. She also directed attention towards the opposition parties and their statements, questioning their role and relationship with the election commission.
"Was it a matter of political rivalry, or was there a deeper issue at play?" she asked.
The involvement of NGOs, both local and foreign, was another aspect she highlighted, questioning the funding and influence they may have had on the protests.
"Where did the money trail lead?" she wondered. "We must trace the origins and understand the impact of these external factors."
President Samia also raised the controversial question of whether there were alternative, peaceful avenues to address the challenges between the government and political parties, instead of the destructive path chosen.
"Was there no other way to resolve these issues without causing harm to our citizens and our nation's reputation?" she asked, leaving room for debate.
The methods employed to quell the riots were also under scrutiny, with the commission tasked with examining the strategies and their effectiveness.
"We must learn from this incident and ensure that our response mechanisms are improved," she emphasized.
President Samia's address concluded with a note of confidence in the commission's ability to deliver recommendations that would set the agenda for a future Reconciliation Commission, aimed at healing the political divides within the country.
"I have faith in your expertise and experience," she said. "Your work will be crucial in moving our nation forward and reclaiming our peace."
And so, with a sense of hope and determination, President Samia officially launched the Commission of Inquiry, inviting discussion and debate on the path forward for Tanzania.
