Bold statement: the clock is ticking on Tropicana Field’s comeback, and officials aren’t taking any chances with Opening Day just around the corner. St. Petersburg leaders provided an upbeat update on the ongoing hurricane recovery efforts, expressing strong confidence that everything will be ready for the first pitch of the season.
City administrator Beth Herendeen told reporters, including Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times and Kristie Ackert of The Associated Press, that there is currently no concern about being ready by April 6. The recent milestone was the roof repair, with panels reinstalled last month, and the focus now shifting to interior restoration. Planned improvements include clubhouse and seating repairs, plus enhancements to the video board.
A new artificial turf is also on the agenda. Ackert mentions that work on the playing surface could begin in January, while Topkin notes the Rays hope to have it completed by the end of Spring Training. If that timeline holds, the team would gain valuable familiarity with the turf before the regular season begins. The Rays’ 2025 schedule starts with road series in St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Minnesota, followed by a home stretch against the Cubs and Yankees from April 6–12.
For 2025, the Rays spent the season at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, a roughly 11,000-seat outdoor venue. Tropicana Field, although frequently subject to criticism when compared with other MLB stadiums, remains preferable to a basement-level or lower-tier facility.
Lease-wise, Tropicana Field had been set to run through 2027, with a one-year extension granted after the venue was taken out of service. If everything proceeds as planned for next season, the lease will expire after the 2028 campaign. The City of St. Petersburg bore repair costs as the lessor, approving just under $60 million for the work. The Rays continue pursuing a long-term stadium arrangement in the Tampa area, a priority for new owner Patrick Zalupski, who acquired the team after Stu Sternberg’s attempts to renegotiate the stadium deal stalled following the 2024 hurricanes.
