Imagine a scene on a busy road where a driver abruptly stops, swings open his car door without glancing for oncoming vehicles, and creates a dangerous situation that could easily have turned into an accident. This shocking moment was witnessed recently and has since sparked heated debate about road safety and personal responsibility while driving. But here's where it gets controversial: the driver didn't stop at this reckless act; he reportedly went on to block another driver trying to park after being honked at — and this is the part most people miss about what triggers road rage incidents.
The incident took place near BMW Performance Motors along Alexandra Road, around 5:30 pm on November 23. The witness, known as Stomper Lim, described how a white car halted right by the carpark entrance, only for the driver to suddenly open his door without checking for traffic. According to Lim, this careless move could have led to a collision, showing a blatant disregard for road safety.
Lim didn’t hold back in expressing his frustration: “The self-entitled man just stopped right in the middle of the road to open his door. When I honked to warn him about the danger, he clearly didn’t appreciate it.” To add fuel to the fire, the driver, who had family members in the vehicle, later deliberately blocked Lim from parking his car.
"This kind of behavior is exactly what fuels road rage," Lim said. "Stopping in the middle of the road just to let passengers out without any concern for oncoming traffic is not only unsafe but irresponsible. And the worst part? He even had the nerve to scold me afterward." Lim made it clear he wasn’t interested in engaging with the driver’s bullying behavior but hoped this incident would serve as a wake-up call for the man to be more careful when opening car doors in the future.
Taking the matter seriously, Lim reported the incident to the police after learning that opening car doors without checking for traffic is actually an offense. According to the Road Traffic Act, anyone caught opening vehicle doors in a way that endangers others faces penalties including a fine of up to $2,000, imprisonment for as long as three months, or both. Repeat offenders could face fines up to $5,000, jail terms lasting up to six months, or a combination of both.
What’s your take on this? Should drivers be held strictly accountable for such careless actions, or do you think the honking driver overreacted? This story raises questions about who really is at fault— the person risking others’ safety by thoughtlessly opening a car door, or the one who responds with honks and frustration.
