Starting with a humble canoe rental business in Potter Park, they expanded their operations by purchasing an aging barge and constructing their first boat, the Spirit of Lansing. This venture marked the beginning of a riverboat business that would become a cherished part of Lansing's history.
In 1997, inspired by the movie 'Titanic,' John Chamberlain expanded the boat's size, adding a dance floor, atrium, and stairs, which increased its capacity to 500 passengers. The Michigan Princess quickly became a popular attraction, hosting notable local politicians, including former Governor John Engler, and providing a unique setting for celebrations and events.
Despite its popularity, the riverboat faced a tragic turn of events in late 2024 when a failed maintenance attempt resulted in irreparable structural damage. The airbag failure during the process of returning the boat to the water led to the decision to dismantle it. While insurance was in place, the costs were insufficient to restore the boat to its former glory.
