Attention, Singapore! A major disruption is coming to the East-West Line (EWL), and it's time to prepare for the impact. From November 29th to December 8th, Simei and Tanah Merah MRT stations will be closed, causing a ripple effect on your daily commute. Get ready for longer travel times and crowded stations!
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a reminder, urging commuters to anticipate the changes. During this period, there will be no train service between Bedok and Tampines, and between Tanah Merah and Expo stations. This means affected stations and bus stops will be bustling, and your journey could take up to 30 minutes longer.
But here's where it gets controversial: the closures are necessary to connect the tracks to the East Coast Integrated Depot and add a new platform at Tanah Merah station. LTA estimates that around 180,000 passengers could be affected daily during these 10 days of service adjustments. Trains will run at reduced frequencies, with five-minute intervals between Tampines and Pasir Ris, eight minutes between Paya Lebar and Bedok, and five minutes between Expo and Changi Airport during peak hours.
For those traveling from the east, LTA suggests using existing public bus services to connect to alternative MRT lines like the Downtown Line. Shuttle bus services, Shuttle 7 and Shuttle 8, will be provided to ply between Bedok, Tampines, and Expo stations at frequent intervals.
It's crucial to plan your journeys in advance and stay updated through LTA's MyTransport.SG app, social media channels, and station posters. SMRT staff will be on hand to assist passengers during this period.
And this is the part most people miss: the authority encourages commuters to consider alternative MRT routes if possible, as they may offer shorter travel times. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow has hinted at more scheduled closures of the rail network, stretched out over longer periods, to facilitate major upgrades of MRT lines.
