A bold initiative is underway to cultivate a new generation of leaders with a profound grasp of Indian culture and economics. The Confederation of Indian Industry Young Indian chapter in Singapore (CII Yi) has set an ambitious goal to facilitate student exchanges for 300 youths annually. But here's where it gets controversial: this program aims to go beyond mere cultural exchange, delving deep into the heart of India's diverse society.
CII Yi Chairman Mohamed Irshad emphasized the need for a long-term strategy to strengthen the historical bonds between Singapore and India. He believes that fostering a deep understanding of Indian culture and economy is crucial for the future of these two nations.
Singapore, already India's largest foreign direct investment hub, is taking this relationship to the next level. Through various exchange programs, including the 'India Talent Read Programme', students from Singapore are gaining first-hand experience of India's vibrant culture and economy.
"To date, 40 students have embarked on this journey, and we aim to increase this number significantly," Irshad stated.
The exchange is mutual, with 40 students from India's higher education institutions also experiencing life in Singapore. CII Yi's long-term vision is to exchange 300 students annually, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of India's diverse society, including its tier 2 and 3 cities.
This initiative is not just about cultural immersion; it's about building a network of young professionals with a deep connection to the Indian market. The Indian community in Singapore, particularly experts in the financial sector, will play a pivotal role in this endeavor, acting as mentors and guides.
"We are building upon a rich historical legacy," Irshad added, highlighting the importance of the partnership between India and Singapore.
The Singapore minister echoed this sentiment, stating that the India-Singapore Youth Summit is a pivotal step towards strengthening ties between the youth of both countries.
"The India Experience Immersion Programme, a collaboration between CII and the Institute of South Asian Studies, has already empowered students to explore India's diverse landscape," noted Dinesh Vasu Dash, Minister of State in the Ministries of Culture, Community and Youth, and Manpower.
Avnish Patnaik, Chief Representative and Head of CII in Singapore, believes that the future of the India-Singapore partnership lies in the hands of young professionals, entrepreneurs, and students. He sees this platform as a unique space where leaders, academics, and students can learn from each other, shaping the next chapter of this shared journey.
About 100 delegates from Singapore and India attended the summit, a testament to the growing interest and importance of this initiative.
