Staten Island's South Shore residents may have encountered an unusual sight near Arthur Kill Road and Johnson Street: an exposed pipeline with a warning sign. This sign, with its faded orange and black colors, reads, 'Warning Liquid Petroleum Pipe Line Do Not Anchor Or Dredge.' While it might seem ominous, the situation is actually quite different from what it appears. The pipeline, owned by the Colonial Pipeline Company of Georgia, has been identified by a concerned citizen who ventured close to the water's edge. Surrounded by rocks, old tires, and bird nests, the pipeline extends into the water, partially covered in what looks like moss or algae. However, the pipeline is no longer in use for transporting petroleum products. Instead, it's filled with inert, low-pressure nitrogen, according to a Colonial Pipeline Company spokesperson. The company is aware of the exposed section during low tide and is monitoring its condition to ensure safety. It's important to distinguish this pipeline from the Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline, owned by Williams and Transco, which will run along a 17.4-mile underwater route through the Raritan and Lower New York bays, including Staten Island's shores. This new pipeline will transport gas across state lines to boost gas reserves for New York City and Long Island, but it won't directly benefit Staten Islanders. Despite this, National Grid plans to increase gas bills by 3.5% for the borough to help fund the pipeline. National Grid believes that this investment will ultimately benefit Staten Islanders by improving energy efficiency and potentially saving residents $2.5 billion in energy costs over the next 15 years. This project highlights the complex relationship between infrastructure development, local communities, and the environment, inviting further discussion on the trade-offs and benefits of such initiatives.
