Earthquakes in Sumatra Send Shivers Through Penang
The recent 6.5-magnitude earthquake in northern Sumatra has caused a ripple effect, with tremors felt as far as Penang. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed that the earthquake, which occurred at 12:56 PM on the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered minor tremors in several states along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The State Fire and Rescue Department director, Mohamad Shoki Hamzah, reported that personnel responded to a tremor felt at the Ampang Jajar flats along Jalan Permatang Pauh at around 1:36 PM. The response team arrived at 1:49 PM to assess the situation, confirming the presence of a minor tremor as reported. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage to the building, and the operation concluded at 2:10 PM.
Director-General Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip provided additional details about the earthquake's epicenter, located 8km south of Simeulue, Indonesia, at coordinates 2.7° N and 95.9° E, with a depth of 57km. He assured the public that there is no tsunami threat to the country.
