Texas is making headlines by bringing in Sterling Berkhalter, a wide receiver who previously played for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, as part of their active pursuit in the NCAA transfer portal. Reports indicate that Berkhalter visited the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, adding another layer to the team's recruitment efforts.
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 203 pounds, Berkhalter has recently been granted a waiver allowing him to enjoy a sixth season of eligibility, which is crucial for his career journey.
Originally an unranked recruit from Cincinnati’s Princeton High School in the 2020 recruiting cycle, Berkhalter only held an offer from Liberty at the time. However, he took a year to hone his skills at the Georgia Prep Sports Academy, where he transformed into one of the nation’s top prep football talents. This development led him to sign with North Carolina A&T, despite interest from 14 other programs, including Liberty, which continued to pursue him.
During his time in Greensboro, Berkhalter made an immediate impact, starting in three of the five games he played that season and tallying seven receptions for 62 yards. The following year in 2022, he became a key player, starting 10 out of 11 games, showcasing his explosive abilities with 28 receptions amounting to 414 yards and two touchdowns. Notably, he had three catches that exceeded 34 yards, underlining his capability for big plays.
After transferring to Cincinnati, Berkhalter sat out the 2023 season due to redshirting but participated in two games. He returned to the field the next year, contributing significantly by playing in 12 games with 11 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown, averaging an impressive 17.4 yards per reception.
In search of further growth, Berkhalter made another move for the 2025 season, landing at Wake Forest. There, he had the most productive season of his career, catching 30 passes for 416 yards and scoring two touchdowns, including a remarkable 61-yard reception against Towson.
With the recent departures of DeAndre Moore Jr. and Parker Livingstone from the roster, the Longhorns have not only secured star transfer Cam Coleman but are also keen on bolstering their receiving depth. Berkhalter stands out as an experienced option who can add value on the outside, particularly if Kaliq Lockett does not emerge as a reliable rotation player in 2026.
