Tragic Loss: NASCAR Legend Greg Biffle & Family Die in Plane Crash (2026)

A devastating loss has shaken the NASCAR world and beyond: Greg Biffle, a racing legend celebrated for his skill on the track and his immense heart off it, tragically passed away in a plane crash alongside his wife, their children, and three others. Biffle was only 55 years old, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations. But here's where it gets controversial... Some believe this tragedy highlights the risks associated with private air travel, especially for high-profile individuals.

Greg Biffle, recognized as one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, met his untimely end on Thursday, along with three members of his family and three others in a heartbreaking plane crash. What makes this even more poignant is that Biffle had become increasingly known in recent years for his dedication to humanitarian work, showing a side of himself that resonated deeply with fans and communities in need.

Official reports indicate that seven lives were lost in the crash. Families of the victims have confirmed that Biffle was a passenger on a Cessna Citation business jet. The aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Statesville (N.C.) Regional Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. ET. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) immediately launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, and airport manager John Ferguson announced at a press conference that the airport would be closed indefinitely as they investigated the crash site.

Cristina Biffle, Greg's wife, their son Ryder, and daughter Emma were also among those who perished in the accident. The other victims were identified as Dennis Dutton and his son, Jack, along with Craig Wadsworth.

The families released a deeply emotional statement Thursday afternoon, expressing the profound grief and devastation they were experiencing:

“We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words. Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young son Ryder and Greg’s daughter Emma (mother – Nicole Lunders). Emma was a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely joyful child. Dennis Dutton and his son Jack were deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them. Craig Wadsworth was beloved by many in the NASCAR community and will be missed by those who knew him. Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives. We ask for privacy, compassion and understanding as we grieve and begin to process this unimaginable loss. We are grateful for the kindness and support that has been extended to our families during this incredibly difficult time. At this moment, our focus is on honoring their lives and supporting one another.”

NASCAR also issued a statement, reflecting the shock and sadness felt throughout the racing community:

“NASCAR is devastated by the tragic loss of Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton in a fatal plane crash. Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport. On the track, Greg’s talent and tenacity earned him championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, as well as numerous wins and accolades in the NASCAR Cup Series. Beyond his racing career, he gave of himself for the betterment of our community. Most notably, Greg spent countless hours of his time helping the citizens of North Carolina during the disasters that followed Hurricane Helene. His tireless work saved lives. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Greg’s entire family, friends, and all who were touched by his life.”

Biffle enjoyed a remarkable 15-year career in the Cup Series, participating in 515 races and securing 19 victories. The vast majority of his time was spent driving for car owner Jack Roush, forming a powerful and successful partnership. Before reaching the pinnacle of NASCAR, Biffle demonstrated his talent by winning championships in both the Xfinity Series (in 2002) and the Craftsman Truck Series (in 2000), proving his versatility across different racing formats.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Biffle was nominated for induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2024. Adding to his accolades, he received the NMPA Myers Brothers Award in the same year for his extraordinary efforts in providing aid to Western North Carolina mountain communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This award highlights his commitment to helping others, showcasing his character beyond the racetrack. And this is the part most people miss... It wasn't just about the racing for Greg Biffle; it was about using his platform to make a real difference in the world.

Hailing from Vancouver, Washington, Biffle first captured the attention of Jack Roush through his impressive performances in the annual “Winter Heat” series of late model races held in Tucson, Arizona. Hall of Famer Benny Parsons played a key role in bringing Biffle to Roush's attention, urging him to recognize the young driver's potential. As Roush himself stated in 1998,
