Ukraine has made a bold move, striking a Russian shadow tanker in the Mediterranean Sea for the first time, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This action highlights the evolving strategies employed in the war, particularly the targeting of Russian assets.
On Friday, Ukrainian forces targeted the Qendil, an empty oil tanker flying the flag of Oman, with drone strikes. According to sources, the vessel was empty at the time of the attack, mitigating any immediate environmental concerns.
This incident is part of a broader trend. Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on vessels within Russia's shadow fleet in recent weeks. But here's where it gets controversial: these attacks are causing significant disruptions to the flow of Russian oil.
As a result of these attacks, oil tankers carrying Russian oil are now avoiding the quickest route through the Black Sea to the Turkish straits. Instead, they are opting for a longer journey along the coasts of Georgia and Turkey to evade potential drone strikes. Ship-tracking data indicates this shift in strategy, with some tankers adding approximately 350 miles, or 70%, to their voyages from the port of Novorossiysk to the Turkish straits.
Furthermore, the attacks and adverse weather conditions have significantly impacted Russian oil exports from Black Sea terminals. In November, exports were notably lower than initially planned, with both bad weather and Ukrainian attacks contributing to delays in loading and departures. This has also led to a decrease in Russia's fuel exports from Black Sea ports.
Ukrainian forces have increasingly focused on targeting Russian oil infrastructure, including refineries, storage facilities, and export terminals, using drones and missiles. The Center for European Policy Analysis has noted a strategic shift, with attacks now targeting critical refinery equipment, some of which is Western-made and subject to sanctions.
