Scientists at the University of Witwatersrand and the University of East Anglia have unveiled a groundbreaking method to manipulate light without relying on mirrors, materials, or special lenses. This discovery, published in Light: Science & Applications, challenges long-held assumptions about light's behavior—revealing it can naturally develop chiral properties (left-right handedness) as it propagates freely through space. Dr. Kayn Forbes from UEA’s School of Chemistry explains that light doesn’t require engineered surfaces or exotic materials to achieve this. Instead, it simply needs a carefully balanced state of spin and twist, which can emerge organically as it moves through empty space. This phenomenon, dubbed 'topological fingerprint,' allows scientists to tune light’s behavior by adjusting its geometry, offering a revolutionary approach to quantum communication, medical diagnostics, and data transmission.
