Oh, what a waste of talent! Michelle Pfeiffer's Christmas comedy fails to deliver.
In a world dominated by generic Netflix Christmas movies, this one promised something different. With a star-studded cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Felicity Jones, and Chloë Grace Moretz, and directed by Michael Showalter (known for the Oscar-winning 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye'), it seemed like a surefire hit. But alas, the movie starts on a bold note, dismissing the entire Christmas genre with a sharp feminist critique of 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'. Pfeiffer's character, Claire Clauster, a disgruntled Texan mom, delivers a witty takedown of Steve Martin's character, questioning his heroism and the minimal screen time his wife gets.
However, the film quickly falls into a familiar 'dysfunctional family holiday' trope, blending awkwardly with 'Home Alone'. The plot twist of Claire being left behind on a family trip is a bit too predictable and doesn't quite land. As the story progresses, the family must reconcile their differences and appreciate the importance of mom's support during the holidays. But the execution falls flat, with half-hearted characterizations and a dated subplot about a 'perfect' Asian-American family.
The quirky soundtrack, while trying to add some charm, ends up being a bit grating. It's a shame, because Pfeiffer's charisma shines through, even in the film's weaker moments. This movie deserved better, and so do its viewers.
