Due to the unpredictable and dangerous ocean swells impacting Wollongong Harbour, the Wollongong City Council had no choice but to cancel the highly anticipated New Year's Eve fireworks display scheduled for 9 pm.
The height of the waves crashing against the break wall, coupled with predictions of even higher swells leading up to and beyond the scheduled start time, made it impossible to safely launch the fireworks from their planned positions.
Despite efforts to find alternative launch sites, the risks to public safety and the safety of staff could not be mitigated in time for the 9 pm start. This decision was made in consultation with the fireworks contractor and emergency services, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
While the Council understands the deep disappointment this news will bring, public safety remains their utmost priority. In the face of such unpredictable circumstances, guaranteeing public safety was simply not feasible.
Although the fireworks won't light up the sky as planned, the evening is not a complete loss. Roving entertainers and the Wollongong Summer Carnival in Lang Park will still provide a festive atmosphere, continuing as scheduled until 9 pm.
It's not the end to 2025 that anyone envisioned, but the Council extends its warmest wishes to the community for a happy and prosperous New Year in 2026.
